Parents of a day old baby who was sold and rescued by operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have explained that they were pressurised to sell the baby to fulfill financial obligations .
The wife said she had to endure hunger as she went into labour with little food and had no money to deposit for the hospital treatment.
According to her,” Just after delivery, I was so weak and started bleeding profusely and became unconscious but later my husband told me that the baby is dead.But.i insisted that my baby was alive and I demanded that she be handed over to me”.
The Baby’s father, Success Uzochukwu said that he traded the child in order to pay bills.
In her account, the owner of the clinic, Florence Jonah alleged that the couple made arrangements for sale of the baby before the mother of the baby was admitted to the hospital.
She alleged that the father of the baby sought a buyer to enable raise funds to complete his wife’s traditional marriage.
She said the mother of the baby had before she gave birth, contacted the buyer and that she was involved in ensuring that the baby was delivered and handed over to the buyer adding that she received N600,000 for the sale of the baby which she was made to transfer to the police account after her arrest.
