In a bid to appease Lawyers of northern extraction and attract soft landing in disinviting the Kaduna State Governor,Nasir El-Rufai, the Nigerian Bar Association has written to the Muslim Lawyers Association in Nigeria (MULAN).
The NBA had in the letter requested MULAN to nominate another notherner to replace the Kaduna State governo as one of the speakers in the association’s forth coming virtual conference .
MULAN in its response said
“My President Sir, thanks for the offer. We understand the decision of NBA NEC was based on not allowing any person tainted with disregard for the rule of law to use our platform. We do not have any problem with that.
“Our only demand is for the same objective standard to be applied to other persons slated to speak at the AGC. In this respect, our view is that Former President Obasanjo who never had any regard for the Supreme Court or respect for citizens’ rights cannot be allowed to speak at the AGC. The same brush tars Gov. Nyesom Wike who has unapologetically abused the rights of citizens including demolition of Hotel or other property without court order in Rivers State and he’s not entitled to speak on our platform.
“Mr. President sir, we don’t want to attach any ethnic or religious colouring to the decision of the NEC. We believe that the TCCP has enough clout to get untainted persons as Speakers apart from Gov. El-Rufai, Gov. Wike and Former President Obasanjo.
“It is only doing the above that will bring home to bear on all that NBA does not tolerate any abuse of the rule of law. The nomination of another Northern Governor as a replacement for Gov El-Rufai will send a very wrong signal to objective observers. It is not advisable in the circumstance.”
