A 19 year old boy,Ledesi Kote, who was reportedly shot by a police officer for impregnating a girl,may have his leg amputated unless 3 surgeries are performed on his leg.
The father of the boy,Kote ,said he was in his compound in K Dere community in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State on August 21,2020,about 7 am, when a Sienna drove into his compound with about four armed policemen.
According to him,they went straight to his son’s room door and were banging and cocking guns ” I approached them to inquire from them what my son did wrong that they were looking for him,but none of them answered me.It was one of them who angrily told me that my son impregnated a girl”
The next thing he said he heard from the backyard of his house was a gunshot
He explained that one of the officers shot his son in the leg simply because he impregnated a girl and went away with him while he was bleeding profusely and hid him in a private hospital.
Throwing more light on the incident, South South Chairman of Civil Liberties Organizations,Comrade Karl Uchegbu said an unnamed human rights activist in the area and other concerned citizens, took the father to the Rivers State Police Command Headquarters on Moscow road in Port Harcourt, where an official complaint was laid.
Arrangements were said to be made for the immediate transfer of the victim from the village to a better government owned hospital in Port Harcourt.
However, there has been no reaction on the part of the police to find the alleged police suspect and bring him to face his crime
The victim’s family has said it wants justice as the boy, according to doctor, would undergo three surgeries to save his leg otherwise he might have his leg cut off.
