Yahaya Shariff-Aminu,a musician from Kano State sentenced to death for blasphemy against Prophet Mohammed. has appealed the judgement.
In a suit filed in Thursday September 3 at the Kano State High Court by his lawyer,Kola Alanipini, Shariff said he is dissatisfied with the judgement of the Shari’a Court.
He described the Kano State Penal Code as unconstitutional, null and void, having grossly violated and conflicted with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999) as amended and having violated the Human Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights respectively.
Shariff-Aminu was sentenced to death by hanging in August 10,2020 in a judgement delivered by Khalid Aliyu Mohammed Kani.for derogatory remarks about Prophet Mohammed in his song.and was given 30 days period of grace to appeal his sentence which elapses on September 9.
The musician sentence sparked global outrage with many leaders calling for a review of the sentence. He was reportedly refused access to Lawyers who had gone to prison custody to see him in a bid to help him appeai his sentence a report which prison authorities had denied.
The appeal of Thursday have been seen as a step in the right direction.by many Nigerians including Muslim adherents.
However some extremists said they saw nothing wrong with the death sentence as it served him right.
One of those in this school of thought is Umar,a semi- literate artisan who while speaking to current matters swore that Shariff-Aminu deserved to die as the offence he committed against Prophet Mohammed was the highest crime in the land.
” Is he a small boy to insult Prophet Mohammed.?.if he like let him appeai but I don’t think it will change anything.
