Anglican Community demotes Priest for sitting with dismissed gay colleague in Anambra
The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has demoted a Priest in charge of an Archdeaconry in Aguata Diocese of the church in Anambra State for allowing a priest allegedly dismissed for homosexual practice to sit with him.
It will be recalled that nine priests were dismissed by the church in 2017, over alleged involvement in homosexual activities and were subsequently banned from activities in the church.
Following the dismissal, some of them were said to have travelled abroad while others remained in the country.
One of those dismissed who has remained in his community however, attended a burial in his community where he was invited by the Archdeacon in charge of the area to sit with him at the altar informing the people who were at the burial ceremony that the dismissed priest committed no crime and that his dismissal was borne out of envy.
This was said to have compelled the Bishop of Aguata Diocese,Rt Rev, Samuel Ezeofor to set up a panel to investigate the matter.
Following the recommendation of the church panel, the Archdeacon was suspended and demoted to a Reverend without portfolio having been relieved of his duties
