A Woman identified as Maureen, is currently in critical condition in an undisclosed medical facility after her brother allegedly attacked her over their father’s property in Enugu State.
Maureen 59, said following the attack by the brother, her younger sisters and her, immediately reported the matter to the Trans Ekulu police station but rather than arrest the culprit, the police detained her and her sisters.
The development is coming after the Supreme Court ruled that Women can inherit their father’s property.
However, custodians of Igbo culture have dismissed the supreme court judgement with a wave of hand.
They said the judgement can not stand as it aimed to bastardize their culture and tradition.
The south east traditional rulers council had urged Ndigbos to shun the supreme court judgement describing it as a nullity in view of the fact that the Igbo culture allows females to receive their dues immediately after their marriage ceremonies..
Igwe Simon Itodo of Nsukka, who made this known while speaking on behalf of the council, said apart from what a daughter is given on the day of marriage, her husband also has his own share of properties from his family which she automatically inherits.
According to him, the judgement of the supreme court will result in avoidable conflicts as single motherhood and divorce and as such will not stand.
