SSANU,NASU to go on 2 weeks strike from October 5
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities ( SSANU) and the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), are to embark on a two week strike beginning from Monday October 5,
The two groups jointly resolved to go on strike after a meeting of its Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Friday,at the University of Lagos, (Akoka).
Briefing the media after the meeting, ), the Chairman of SSANU, Olusola Sowunmi and NASU Chairman, Kehinde Ajibade , both of UNILAG branch said the strike is general and involve all public universities in the country.
According to them, the union decided to embark on the Industrial action to press home their demands on contentious issues from the federal government and said that the action is a directive from the national leadership of the unions to all their branches nation-wide.
Their demands they listed include,non payment of arrears of their minimum wage for 10 months,inconsistency in the implementation of the Integrated Payroll and Personal Information System ( IPPIS) ,non payment of arrears of their earned allowance since 2012, neglect and poor funding of universities, corruption and non constitution of visitation panels
The unions warned that they would proceed on a total strike iif the federal government failed to address all their demands.
The federal government had directed tertiary institutions to resume academic activities, however the strike action called by SSANU,NASU and the ongoing strike by ASUU meant that the federal government directive on re-opening will have to wait for some time..
