The Vice President,Yemi Osinbajo, has aligned with the decision by the Inspector General of Police to take FSARS and other tactical squares off routine patrol in view of their menace to innocent citizens
Osinbajo who was speaking to State House Correspondents on Sunday, said that the President is also in support of the move.
He described the situation where innocent Nigerians are maimed and killed by men of the police force, FSARS and other tactical squads as objectionable and unacceptable .Moreso ,when they are the ones mandated to protect the same people they mistreat.
Osinbajo specifically condemned the role of the police squads in investigating cybercrime where they arrest innocent persons who are seen with phones and laptops in public places and said it calls for concern.
” Iam very concerned. Infact sometimes angry about what I see happening to young men and women who are arrested, some cases maimed or killed by men of the police force and some cases by those who man tactical units of the police force such as FSARS and the other different tactical units as they are..It is completely objectionable,unacceptable.”
” These are individuals who are meant to protect Nigerians for example, You can not have a situation where FSARS says they are investigating cybercrime and are arresting people, young men and women who are carrying laptops and their phones.
“Cybercrime is an electronic crime .There is no way that you can Investigate that by seizing peoples phones in taxis or in their cars So I think it is very obvious that this is a major concern .A few bad eggs within the police force are causing a lot of this because it is all over the place in different states.There is a need of course, to take serious action. I think that the IG’s statement today is a good first step ” he says.
