Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan, has accused the proscribed Indigenes People of Biafra (IPOB) as responsible for Wednesday”s attack in the state which left two Senior Police Officers killed and two police stations razed.
The Commissioner while speaking on the recent attacks on police facilities and personnel in the state said that” on Wednesday,,21/10/2020, at about 2130hrs, suspected IPOB members numbering about 500 , invaded Oyigbo Area Command, Oyigbo and Afam Police Stations setting them ablaze and damaging about 15 vehicles including one Amored Personnel Carrier (APC).”
He said”Two Police officers were killed and some arms and ammunitions carted away by the hoodlums. In another attack at the Mile 1 Police Station, same rampaging youths under the guise of#EndSARS protests made frantic attempt at burning the Police Station and Office of Eagle Crack Squad.”
” They were however repelled by superior fire power of the police as three of them were fatally wounded in the exchange of gunfire, while eight (8)of them were arrested and immediately transferred to State CID where they are currently helping in our Investigation.”
According to him, the Command has been stabilized though there are remnants of the group still posing pockets of threats in Oyigbo Local Government Area and assured that no stone would be left unturned till they are arrested and brought to justice.
Mukan stated that adequate deployments have been made to cover all the flashpoints to ensure that the hoodlums are kept at arms length and appealed to residents of the state to abide by the curfew imposed by the government for the overall interest of the state .
He said that the#EndSARS protest and subsequent demands were being addressed by the Federal Government and State Government ,therefore, any attempt to disturb the peace and undermine the security enjoyed in the state will be resisted.
