Two pupils in Ogun public schools have allegedly died during the state government ongoing deworming exercise.
The children, Omolaso Keyede aged 8 primary 2 and Eniola Oyeyemi aged 9 of St James African Primary and Nursery School,Idi-Ape, Abeokuta, reportedly reacted to the deworming drug and died after vomiting and stooling.
The pupils were said to have taken the drugs during the school hours and returned home sick and were rushed to the Apata-Iye clinic and maternity Hospital,Odo Oyo where they were confirmed dead.
While many believe the deworming drug was responsible for the deaths of the pupils, the state Commissioner for Health,Dr Tomi Coker said the drug is not poisonous
According to the Commissioner, the drug was administered on her as well as other top governmentt officials at the flag-off of the exercise adding that the drugs were also adminstered on 249 pupils of the same school without side effects.
Coker linked the cause of death of the children to cholera and said Investigation carried out
by the state and Federal Ministry of Health officials revealed that the children died of severe case of vomiting and diarrhea ..
