A cleaner at Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State,has killed himself over non payment of salary
Aondona Yaga, reportedly lived with his grandmother in the same compound and took ill some days ago but needed money to continue his treatment.
Yaga was said to be owed 3 months salary by the local government he worked for but decided to take his life on Tuesday night when frustration of how to make ends meet set in.
According to reports,Yaga went to his room and locked himself and set himself ablaze.The smoke from his room triggered curiosity of neighbours to sort out what was happening but it was too late for him to be rescued as he was already dead.
Meanwhile, the Gwer East Local Government Council has reacted to news of Yaga’s death and salary being owed him, saying renumeration of casual staff are not captured in local government payroll because they are engaged by the council and are paid when funds generated within the council are available.
The Benue Police spokesperson, Catherine Anene said Investigation is currently ongoing.
