The US Republican Party suffered a major defeat in Tuesday’s Senatorial runoff that seeks to determine which of the two political parties will form the majority and lead the Senate.
The Republicans already have 50 senate seats but needed just a seat to emerge majority. The Democrats on their part needed two Senatorial seats to add up to the 48 already secured to make a tie which will be broken by the Vice President- elect, Kamala Harris to emerge leader of the Senate.
The runoff races were between Democrat Raphael Warnock versus Republican Kelly Loeffler on one hand and Republican David Perdue versus Democrat Jon Ossoff on the other hand.
The Pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church turned politician Warnock beat his challenger, Loeffler with 2,227,296 against Loeffler’s 2,173,866 votes to make history in one of the coveted senate seats while 33 year-old documentary film producer, Ossof is leading his Republican challenger, Perdue with2,208,717against Perdue’s 2,192,347 votes , a magin too close to call with many votes still uncounted.
Warnock is the first Georgian Black to be elected into the US Senate.
