The Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU has said that Universities are not prepared to reopen in the midst of a second wave of coronavirus.
ASUU’s National President, Prof.Biodun Ogunyemi who made the union’s position known on Television on Tuesday said it would be inappropriate to reopen universities as universities saddled with congestion problems and lack of essential Infrastructures cannot cope in a situation of emergency.
He said the problem is further compounded by lack of funds for alternative learning models such as virtual classes which most schools are exploiting but said “more than 60 percent of our students will run into trouble, they can’t afford data or smartphones”
The National University Commission had directed Universities to resume academic activities on January 18 after the union called off a ten- month- old strike for alternative payroll system and revitalisation of universities
