INEC proposes 6 months deadline for candidates list submission
As preparation for amendment of the Electoral Act gets underway,the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC,Prof.Mahmoud Yakubu has proposed a six months deadline for political parties to submit the list of their candidates for elections.
Yakubu made the call at a retreat of the National Assembly’s Joint Committee on INEC, and Electoral Matters in Abuja on Friday.
He said the proposed provision would help the commission improve the conduct of election in the country as parties could conduct their primaries and submit the names of their candidates to the commission at least six months to the general elections
In his remarks, Senator Kabiru Gaya, Chairman Senate Committee on INEC, said the purpose of the retreat was to conduct a clause by clause examination of the report and also prepare it for consideration by the Senate and House of Representatives .
He emphasized that the draft copy of the report of the technical commitee was a working document and said whatever was to be crafted in the electoral bill would be done with the supremacy of the constitution .
