NLD spokesman,Myo Nyun reportedly said Suu Kyi, Myanmar President,Win Myint and all chief ministers from their party representing over a dozen state and regions in the country were taken at gunpoint.
The arrest came hours before a new session of parliament was scheduled to open and members who won elections were set to take their seats. The NLD won the elections in a landslide, garnering 396 out of 476 seats. The election was the second to be conducted since Myanmar ttransited from military rule to democracy.
The military has alleged voter fraud in the November election, but the election commission in the country said there is no evidence to support their claims.
Escalating political tensions and fears of military incursion made the international community to urge the military to adhere to Democratic norms and respect the results of the elections .
Until the Sun Kyi’s presidency, Myanmar’s military ruled the country for about fifty years before beginning a transition to democracy in 2010 that eventually resulted in the election of Suu Kyi..
