Gunmen abduct NTA staff in Rivers.
A reporter attached to the Nigeriian Television Authority (NTA) Port Harcourt,Mrs Chidiebere Onyia has been kidnapped.
Onyia ,a mother of three was abducted about 6.30.p.m on Tuesday around Woji area of Port Harcourt.
She was reportedly returning from work in the company of some of her colleagues when the kidnappers who were armed, blocked her vehicle and whisked her away to an unknown location.
The hoodlums were said to have shot sporadically into the air forcing motorists and bystanders to scamper to safety.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the abduction on Wednesday in Port Harcourt.
Omoni said the Command had deployed personnel to locate and rescue Onyia from her abductors.
The PPRO said the Commissioner of Police,Mr Joseph Mukan had ordered the Command’s tactical units to ensure the victim’s safe release.
Meanwhile, the Nigeriian Union of Journalists (NUJ) , Rivers State Council has condemned the abduction of Onyia describing the act as worrisome and regrettable.
The Union in a statement
jointly signed by the Chairman, Stanley Job and Secretary,Ike Wigodo frowned at the incessant attacks on Journalists in recent times saying the development is unacceptable.
The Union stated that freedom of movement as a fundamental prerequisite for a free media required that Journalists move freely in their efforts to serve the public.
The NUJ said the abduction of Journalists was a serious concern as three incidents had taken place recently
It recalled that ,”less than two weeks ago,a reporter with The Punch, Okechukwu Nnodim was abducted in Abuja,
“Also the Business Manager of Silverbird,Segun Owolabi, escaped assassination attempt in Port Harcourt after close of work.
“And now, another Journalist Onyia,was kidnapped in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. This is unacceptable”It said.
The union urged the Rivers State Government and security agencies to do all they can to release the victim and bring
the perpetrators of the crime to book
