Ubima, an agrarian community in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State was tensed on Thursday following the alleged killing of a man identified as Aleruchi Awuzuruike, a goat owner by a 23- year- old neighbor,Chibueze Ojiriome.
Trouble reportedly began when the deceased went to the home of Ojiriome and accused him of stealing and killing his goat.
A source in the village told current matters that the two men engaged in a noisy quarrel and name calling and the suspect allegedly , quickly, took a matchet and hacked Awuzuruike to death .
The residents of the community were said to have burnt the suspect’s home before the police arrived the scene of the incident.
It was learnt that the vigilante group,OSPAC apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the police.
Speaking with newsmen afterwards, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni said one Chibueze Ojiriome , without justification gave several matchete cuts on one Samuel Awuzuruike, which caused his death. Recall that some days ago the same suspect killed a female goat belonging to the deceased.”
He said the incident moved the villagers ” to self help by burning the suspect’s home before the police arrived “adding that the suspect has been arrested while the corpse of Awuzuruike has been deposited in the mortuary.
