President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday met with the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan where they discussed national issues including security challenges facing the country and the Nigrr Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
Speaking to State House Correspondents at the end of the closed door meeting,Lawan described the deliberation as extensive but fruitful, saying areas prone to security challenges would in the next two months have their environments secured to enable them engage in agricultural activities and other businesses.
The Senate President said “there is nothing more topical than the security of Nigeria
” Nobody would like to see the kind of thing that we experience in various parts of the country in the form of insecurity. As political leaders,we cannot shy away from that,we have to get our people secured,we have to secure the environment for them to earn the means of livelihood.
We would like to see our farmers go back to farms before the rainy season starts. And this means we have to secure the rural parts of Nigeria as well as urban centres because we need businesses to flourish.
” So I believe that between now and the next two months, there will be a lot of activities to ensure that we secure our environment for people to live a normal life., where we also believe that the government is headed in the right direction ” he said.
He recalled that “the National Economic Council approved of taking some funds from the excess crude accounts with a view to giving more resources to the armed forces.
” This is a commendable effort he said, adding” We are ready to help with appropriaion to ensure that we acquire those weapons for the armed forces to fight and end this insecurity in the North East,in the North West,in the South- South, and South West as well.”
On NDDC, the Senate President stressed the need to sanction all those implicated by the ongoing forensic audit reports.
“It is very very significant that whoever is found culpable should be treated as such,so that that will serve as a lesson and as a deterrent to others, because NDDC should have transformed the Niger Delta into a better environment than what it’ has” he said.
Lawan used the forum to condemn divisive utterances by the political class and appealed for national cohesion and integration saying it is the panacea for a peaceful and successful nation.
