The Senate on Tuesday confirmed the nomination of 5 former service chiefs as non-career ambassadors.
The nomination of the ex- service chiefs followed series of critism and petitions in view of escalation of security challenges during their tenure leading to the call for their sack by the upper legislature.
In the proceeding leading to the confirmation, the Senate Minority leader, Eyinnaya Abaribe had asked why the petitions against the service chiefs were dismissed without cogent reasons.
The Senate President Ahmed Lawan overruled Abaribe’s position saying that the nomination of the former service chiefs cannot be nullified on the basis of a call for their sack adding that the assignment for which they were nominated was different.
The ex- service chiefs are General Abayomi Olonisakin former Defence chief,, Lieutenant General Tukur Burutai former Chief of Army Staff, and Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas former Chief of Naval Staff,
Others are Air Vice Marshall Sadique Abubakar former Chief of Air Staff, and Air Vice Marshall Mohammed Usman former Chief of Defence Intelligence.
President Buhari had on February 4,2021, nominated the former service chiefs as non- career ambassadors.
The former service chiefs were appointed a week after they were relieved of their duties and replaced by new military chiefs.
