Despite criticism of inexperience and corruption charges levelled against him, the Senate has confirmed Abdulrasheed Bawa as the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC.
Bawa,appeared before the Senate for screening on Wednesday ,following the mention of order 17 of the Senate Rule by Majority leader, Abdullahi Yahaya (APC-Kebbi) which gave room for the admission of the nominee as well as Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters,Sen. Babajide Omovorare into the chambers.
Others admitted included the Speaker of Kebbi State House of Assembly, some lawmakers at the House of Representatives and family members.
The 40- year- old was until his new appointment,the head of the Lagos Zonal office of the EFCC .
Bawa holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Masters in International Relations and Diplomacy.He was a Deputy Chief Detective Superintendent of the EFCC,a position he held since 2016.
The new EFCC Chairman whose nomination was forwarded to the Senate by President Muhammadu Buhari, was accused of corruption and insurbodination by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami. He was dragged before the presidential panel in EFCC presided over by Justice Ayo Salami in June 2020.
