The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami has condemned the statement by Prof. Itsey Sagay over Malami’s recommendation of Abdulrasheed Bawa as the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC (EFCC).
Sagay who is the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) had said that Malami would not allow the new chairman of the Anti-Graft Agency ,Bawa to succeed on the basis of filial relationship, and being a powerful politician ,he would interfere in his job.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Dr Umar Gwandu, Malami said Sagay’s submissions were “marred by conflicting statements and confused speculations.
” It was the same man who in the same report was quoted as showing great optimism with the appointment of the new EFCC chairman also becoming pessimist for a speculative future”
Malami said in the same report, Sagay had said” inasmuch the removal of Magu to me looks unsatisfactory,we have to move in and if he (Bawa) is as good as his credentials indicate, then I think the future looks promising for the EFCC”
The AGF noted that considering Sagay’s commendation above” there was nothing to worry the new leadership of the EFCC which many Nigerians hail, unless the old man has skeleton in his cupboard.”
“We advise the old man not to start having a hallucinated,mixed- up and confused vision of a prognostic future envisaged by his sentiments.Let Sagay make less noise but allow the young man to discharge his duties with vigour and vibrancy.
Malami added that Nigeriars would be happy if Sagay would explain publicly why he is jittery over the development, which has been praised and commended by Nigerians.”
The AGF said in the exercise of his constitutionally recognised mandate,he is always guided by extant laws in supervising agencies under his control which had been recording tremendous success adding that on no account was there any case of interference and excessive meddling.
