President Muhammadu Buhari has inaugurated a 13- member Governing Council and a 10 – member Board of Trustees of the Ogoni Trust Fund on Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project,( HYPREP.)
The President who inaugurated the bodies on Friday in Abuja said the project was for the benefit of Ogoniland.
The project has the Minister of Environment,Dr Mohammad Abubakar as the Chairman of the governing council while Mr Michael Nwileaghi is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
The President who was represented by the Secretary to the Governmentt of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, said the project was for the remediation of hydrogen carbon impacted sites in Ogoniland for provision of portable water and alternative livelihoods to impacted communities.
Buhari said though some milestones and timelines could not be accomplished circumstantially,,his government was determined to recover lost griounds to achieve it’s goals noting t”hat the goals would be achieved through deliberate efforts to reinvigorate processes and machinery of delivery.”
He urged the new bodies to see their appointment as a patriotic national duty and a clarion call to serve while charging them to promote transparency, propriety and integrity in the operation of HYPREP.
Buhari said on March 3, the Federal Executive Council FEC approved the sum of N 6.05 billion for six water projects in Ogoniland as part of his commitment to improving the socio- economic conditions of Ogoniland.
The Minister said the project will go a long way in improving the socio- economic and political conditions of the people of Ogoniland.
