An outbreak of a yet to be known disease has claimed the lives of three Kano residents.
The Kano State Commissioner for Health, Ibrahim Tsanyawa disclosed disclosed this to reporters at a press conference on Tuesday in Kano.
Tsanyawa said 284 who were infected had been admitted to 25 health facilities.
According to him, the disease first recorded on the 10 th of March,2021, was suspected to be caused by consumption of contaminated flavour and a brand of expired instant drink products.
Tsanyawa said affected persons were discovered in 13 local government areas, with 185 currently on admission while 101 persons have been discharged.
The local government areas affected are Dala Gwade,Fage,Kano Municipal,Ungogo,Kumbotso, Taraumi,Bunkure,Rano, Dawakinjudu, Dawakin- Tofa, Gwarzo and Danbatta.
He said the index case was a six – year old girl who developed abdominal pain, vomiting, jaundice and urinating blood ( hermaturia) after drinking water from a vendor who sourced water from a borehole at a cemetery in the city.
The Commissioner said samples have been taken for test from water, blood and different instant drink flavour powder” to pin down a diagnosis, ranging from food- borne disease,food poisoning,Lassa Fever, Yellow Fever, Dengue Fever, Chemical poisoning to Toxix Hepatitis.”
He added that while the health ministy was still awaiting the results of samples analyses to establish the cause of the infection and identity, it had scaled up surveillance in the 44 local government areas of the state to check the circulation of the suspected products.
