The United Methodist Church Episcopal Area in Nigeria ( UMCN) said it would not hesitate to leave its global body if it approves gay marriage at it’s 2022 General Conference
Bishop Johnwesley Yohanna disclosed this at a news conference on Wednesday, in Jalingo, the Taraba State Capital
Bishop Yohanna said that the Nigerian chapter would also leave if the global body also endorses ordination of gay people at the conference.
According to him, while debate on whether the Church should accept homosexuality started in 1972,votes casted in 2019, favoured traditionalists, who believed that homosexuality was incompatible with Christian teaching.
He said as a cleric who understands the operations of the Church, it was impossible to be one Church yet preach different understanding of marriage.
The Bishop said “if the plan succeeds at the Conference come 2022, we will not be part of UMC that will change the language of the Book of Discipline to accommodate same sex marriage adding Our Loyalty is with Jesus Christ.”
