More details have emerged on the attack of the Owerri Correctional Facility and the Police Command Headquarters by gunmen early today.
The gunmen suspected to be members of the Eastern Security Network ESN reportedly stormed the facilities armed with explosives with no fewer than 10 Hilux Vans ar about 1.a.m , overpowering security guards at the police command.
Eye witness account revealed that no fewer than 150 suspects at the police headquarters were released by the gunmen
Although the number of inmates released by the gunmen at the correctional facility has not been made public, it was gathered that the freed inmates could be more than a thousand.
The gunmen were said to have danced and sang solidarity songs at the government house roundabout for about 30 minutes before attacking the facilities.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, Orlando Ikeukwu who confirmed the attacks however, assured the people of the state that the security agencies were on top of the situation.
According to him, only the SCD section of the Command Headquarters was affected with some vehicles set ablaze by the gunmen.
The streets of Owerri are said to be deserted as the twin incident has created palpable fear among the residents of the state.
