The Federal Government has presented provisional licences to 20 new Universities.
The Universities are Top Faith University, Mkpatak, Akwa Ibom State, Thomas Adewumi University,Oke- Irese,Kwara State,ANAN university,Kwali, Plateau State,Claretian university,Nekede,Imo State and Maranatha University,Mgbidi,Imo State.
Others are Philomath University,Kuje, Abuja,Karl- Kumm University,Vom, Plateau State Khadijat University,Majia, Jigawa State,Edusoko University,Bida, NIger State,Mudiame University,Irrua,Edo State and University of Offa,Kwara State.
Also included in the list are Mewar University,Masaka, Nasarawa State,Havilla University Nde- Ikom,Cross River State,NOK University,Kachia, Kaduna State,Ave Maria University, Nasarawa State,Ahman Pategi University,Kwara State and James Hope University,Lekki,Lagos State.
Still on the list are Al- Istiqama University,Sumaila,Kano State, Capital City University, Kano State and Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria,Kano State.
Presenting the licences to the Universities, the Minister of Education,Mallam Adamu Adamu, charged operators of the Universities to abide by standards for establishing the institutions in line with the guidelines of the National University Commission ( NUC),
Represented by the Minister of State,Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba,Adamu said that the approval of the establishment of the universities was a testimony to the continued patnership of the federal government with the private sector in education development in the country.
The Minister said there was the need for the establishment of more universities to cater for the problem of access to university education.
According to him, with the additional 20 universities, Nigeria now has a total of 99 private universities and urged proprietors to sustain funding toward improved infrastructure and teaching equipment.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the NUC , Prof.Abubakar Rasheed, said that the approval was a landmark achievement for Nigerian education development.
Rasheed said ,,”the NUC is well aware of the need for the nation’s universities to sustain the quality of their programmes along with the quantitative expansion which is the reason why today’s event is coming a little over three years, after licences were issued to the last four private universities that came on board in 2019.”
.In his response, the proprietor of James Hope University,Dr Jim Ovia, who spoke on behalf of other proprietors, said they would comply with the rules and regulations establishing the universities.
He said the establishment of the new universities had enabled the creation of education platform to mention the youths.
