The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi said there impediments in the completion of the third track that leads to Apapa Port.
Amaechi who disclosed this on Monday shortly after his visit to the Apapa Quays Rail Tracks said there were issues concerning removal of structures which might be difficult.
He said that inspite of the challenges of the last track, the inauguration would hold explaining that the two tracks that lead to the Apapa Port had already been completed.
The Minister said ” We have issues concerning whether or not to remove some structures, Luckily, the Nigerian Custom Service has agreed that we should remove the old scanner centre in the port but, this will be difficult.
” We are going to office to have a meeting on what to do about the situation.
” We are working hard to find solutions to the issue of laying the last track.
Amaechi who said he was not an engineer, explained ” it is only when the engineers have come out with proper and time- based solution that the issue will be resolved.”
The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation ( NRC) Mr Fidet Okhiria stressed the need for rail transportation in the country in view of its advantage in easing movement of passengers and goods.
Okhiria said that the essence of linking rail to ports was to enable ships to load directly to the rail tracks, reduce cost of doing business and increase government revenue.
He said “we are having meeting” to deliberate on the best option to go for which will not affect the port’s structure.”
