The Nigerian Senate on Thursday said it is committed to rejuvenating the deplorable state of infrastructure, teaching and learning in tertiary institutions via legislations.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Tetfund,Sen.Kaita disclosed this at a public hearing and presentation of memoranda on three bills on Education sponsored by Sen.Solomon Adeola.
The bills are, A bill for an Act to Provide for Establishment of the Federal University of Technology,Yaba,A Bill for an Act to Provide for Establishment of the Federal University of Technology,Ilaro and Bill for an Act to Provide for Establishment of the Nigerian French Language as an Ibter University Center for French Studies.
Representing by the Vice Chairman of the Committee,Sen. Sandy Onor, Kaita said rejuvenation of the deplorable state of education via legislations would make schools stand out as sound, virile and vibrant systems with ernormous benefits for the youths seeking for knowledge.
Kaita said the move to upgrade the Yaba College of Technology and Ilaro Polytechnics to full- fleged Universities would not only serve as a pathway for affordable education resource centres of excellence but provide employment opportunities for the host communites and other qualified Nigerians.
On his part, Sen Solomon Adeola said the bills for upgrade of the institutions to Universities of Technology was borne out of the desire to expand opportunities-for the teeming youths for technology- based education.
On the bill for establishment of French Language village, Adeola said the French Language village would go a long way in addressing the French Language deficiency in Nigerian professionals.
The Vice Chairman,Yaba College of Technology, Alumni Association said the upgrade of the institution to a full- blown university would enable students to be more grounded in technology, applied science, information and Communication Technology.
