The Senate in Tuesday’s plenary resolved to call on the Security Agents to send adequate personne and equipmentl to communites in NIger state captured by Boko Haram terrorists.
The resolution came after emotion- laden eruptions among lawmakers of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC and the opposition party the PDP floored the Senate..
This followed a motion moved by the Senator representing Niger East Senatorial District, Senator Sani Musa.
Musa had re- echoed the Insecurity situation and especially the warning of his state governor, Abubakar Sani Bello over the presence of terrorists in Munya and Shiroro Local Government Areas of the state where the terrorists had hoisted flags, imposing taxes on innocent people and forcing them to Internally Displaced Persons Camp.
Bello had said he had exhausted without success all channels aimed to nip in the bud the recurring Insecurity in his state
Contributing to the motion, Senator Smart Adeyemi ( APC Kogi) in tears, called on the federal government to immediately brace up to situation saying that resort to foreign help appears to be the way forward given the dismal situation of Insecurity in the country.
“Iam an APC man and have been supporting ny party, but the president should get to know that it has gotten to a point where ,we who are supporters and members of the APC can no longer keep quiet.
” The president must rise to the occasion.. Mr President the nation is on fire. The president must know that this is a bad time for our nation. We must look for foreign support. We must rise to it. They are killing people in the east,in the west,in the south in the north, we should shut down the national assembly. Let’s shut it down if we cannot save this country, we stay in our homes. Our country is bleeding”.he said
For Ike Ekweremadu , immediate past Deputy Senate President, government must find solution to the security problem without delay in the same way it tackled the Covid-19 pandemic in the country in 2020, adding that failure of government to protect its citizens meant loss of legitimacy of that government.
“Any government that cannot protect its citizens, whether it is local government or state or federal, has lost legitimacy.
“We had Covid-19 in this country in the year 2020, some states were shut down in order to deal with that situation, I think the time has come for a place like NIger state to be completely shut down and protect their citizens.
” Olujimi ( PDP Ekiti)There is no political will. None of us here can say we know the process that this government intends to use to battle Insecurity.
Olubunmi Adetumbi ( APC Ekiti)” We need to have a private session with the Commander – Chief of the Armed Forces of this country as a Senate to find a permanent and lasting solution to this huge national embarrassment.
Sani Musa ( APC Niger) moved the motion a day after his state governor, Bello drew the attention of Nigeriars to the presence of Boko Haram terrorists in the state.
The Senate explosion on insecurity comes amidst killing and deafening echoes of secession by some etnic nationalities in the country.
Hope on the direction of present and future of the country appears to be fading with reports of terrorists laying siege to towns and villages across the nation, kidnapping and killing people to satisfy their blood tastebuds
How did we get to this point? Asked a troubled, penniless 65 year- old retired civil servant known as Enyinna.
