The Nigerian Military has restated its commitment to the Buhari government and other democratic institutions in the country.
,The Director of Defence Information, Brigadier- General Onyema Nwachukwu who said this in a statement on Monday in Abuja, noted that the Military shall continue to remain apolitical, subordinate to the civil authority, firmly loyal to the Commander- in Chief, President Buhari and the 1999 Constitutiion as amended.
The Statement said the military will continue to discharge its responsibilities professionally, protect the country’s democracy, defend the territorial integrity of the country and protect lives and properties of citizens.
The Defence statement reminded all military personnel that “it is treasonable to even contemplate the illegality, saying the full wrath of the law will be brought to bear on any personnel found to collude with people having such agenda.
It warned politicians with ambition to govern the country through the back door to desist forthwith and said the military under the current leadership remain committed to the defence of Nigeria’s democracy and its growth.
.
The statement said that the current democratic challenges are not insurmountable adding that the Armed Forces of Nigeria in patnership with other security agencies are working hard to overcome the challenges.
The Defence Headquarters statement was a reaction to call for Military take over made by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Robert Clarke .
Clarke had proposed on Sunday, on Channels TV Programme, “Sunday Politics”, that the Military take over the governmentt temporarily and restructure Nigeria into six states.
The SAN who noted that Nigeria is on the brink of collapse, said a state of emergency was immediately needed with the president delegating all his powers to the chief of defence staff.
Accordiing to him, the state of emergency will oust all democratic institutions including President, Governors and Legislators paving the way for the military to set up six geopolitical zones with a military governor at the head of each state.
” We want a state of emergency to be created in Nigeria today. As it is today, the President, who is the Commander – in Chief has the powers to delegate all his powers to the chief of defence staff.
” Let him now talk to the Senate, House of Reps,State Governors and House of Assembly Speakers that a state of emergency has been created in Nigeria next week which means that all Governor’s and Legislators must go.
” Then the military will now set up what we call the six geographical zones. Let us start on that and allow a military governance over these statez.
” Reduce Nigeria to six states and I can assure you the day Nigeria is reduced to six states and there’s a state of emergency,80 per cent of the money spent on governance will return to the treasury” Clarke said.
He expressed disappointment over the booming business of banditry in the country saying nobody can stop it adding that a civil war is looming over Nigeria from what is going on in the Eastern Region.
