The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said that eight utility vehicles, offices and some movable assets were destroyed during Sunday attack on its Enugu head office.
The commission disclosed this on Monday in a statement by Mr Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee in Abuja.
Okoye said that while six of the utility vehicles (Toyota Hilux) were set ablaze, two other vehicles were smashed and damaged by the unidentified men that attack the INEC state office.
He said that the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Enugu State, Emeka Ononamadu, reported the attack on the state headquarters office.
Accordiing to him, some unidentified persons who came around 9p.m overpowered the security personnel on duty and tried to set the entire building ablaze.
He said that the attention of the security agencies as well as the Federal and State Fire Services in Enugu was drawn to the unfolding situation and they responded swiftly.
“The attackers set the foyer ablaze, vandalised some offices in the main building and caused extensive damage to some of the Commission’s movable assets within the premises.
“Six utility pick up vehicles were burnt down while two more were smashed and damaged.
“The security agencies that were at the scene have commenced investigation. “
Okoye, however, restated that the spate of attacks on the Commission’s facilities portends danger to national electoral activities.
The National Commissioner noted that the commission would be holding an emergency meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Wednesday adding that further statements would be released ahead of the emergency meeting with heads of the security agencies under the auspices of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).
