The House of Representatives on Tuesday called on the Federal Government to reinforce security around schools across the country to check the increasing rate of Insecurity.
The call followed the adopted of a motion by Julius Ihonvbere on the floor of the house on Abuja
The lawmaker stated that the spate of insecurity had become worrisome as it cuts across class, religion or ethnicity
Hello recalled that since December 2020, hundreds of teachers , students and pupils had been abducted from schools across the country
Citing the abduction of about 300 students from Government Secondary school Jangebe in Zamfara State and the abducted students and teachers from Kagara,Niger state which happened within 10 days apart, there was need to worrry over the menace of” kidnap,-for- ransom” which has now become a money -making business’
According to him, the non – existent security infrastructure in schools across the country expose the children to attacks and called for the deployment of modern technology- based security for schools.
The House then urged the Federal Ministry of Education to work out appropriate modalities for the provision of basic security and safety measures to safeguard schools while mandating its Committee on Basic Education and Services, Tertiary Education and Services and Legislative Compliance to ensure compliance.
