The Cross Rivers State Government has dragged a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police,Mr Joseph Mbu to court for allegedly killing one Ayuk Etta Ngon from Etung Local Government Area of the state.
Mr F. I Ititim, the Director of Public Prosecutions in the office of the Attorney General said the move followed a petition to the Attorney General linking Mbu who was a former Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, to the murder of Ngon on December 24, 2018 on Ndung Stream Road,Bendegbe Ekiem.
According to the DPP, Mbu was charged with murder “contrary to Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code,Cap C16, Vol.3, Laws of Cross Rivers State of Nigeria 2004.”
Prior to the signing of the charge sheet by the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Mr Tanko Ashang to commence Mbu’s prosecution, a petition had been written to the Judicial Panel of Enquiry and Restitution Investigating police Brutality where he was asked to release the remains of the man he allegedly murdered for proper burial.
Mbu as Commissioner of Police Rivers State ,was described as most controversial in policing as he rendered the then serving governor policeless and even barricaded the rear axis of the Government House to prevent the governor’s access.
