The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says six tankers, five trucks and two cars have been destroyed in a tanker explosion at Ogere on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Tuesday.
FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun, Mr Ahmed Umar, who confirmed the development said that the incident occurred at about 6.20 a.m.
Umar explained that the explosion occurred in front of Romona trailer park on the expressway.
“The fire is serious; six tankers, five trucks and two cars were burnt in the explosion.
“Ogun State Fire Service is already at the scene, while FRSC operatives are on ground managing the traffic situation,’’ he said.
Umar explained that one person had already been rescued and had been taken to a private hospital in Ogere.
It was learnt that the fuel-laden tanker fell and went up in flames.
Meanwhile, drivers moving towards the Ogere tollgate axis of the Lagos-Ibadan highway, along the proposed new Kara Market inbound Ibadan, have been urged to make use of alternative routes.
The State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) also confirmed that “a tanker laden with fuel, suddenly burst into flames affecting some vehicles.
Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, TRACE Spokesman, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said that while rescue operations continued with combined efforts of TRACE, FRSC, police, NSCDC and the Fire Service, motorists should ply alternative routes.
“Vehicles moving inbound Lagos should go through Saapade-Ode/Remo-Iperu-Sagamu to re-link Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
“In addition, vehicles moving inbound Ibadan should also go through Sagamu-Iperu-Ode/Remo-Saapade to re-link the Lagos-Ibadan expressway,” he said.
