Over eighty percent of persons screened of the Hepatitis said they have no knowledge that such killer disease exists.
Some men and women who were screened during an awareness campaign put together by the Viral Hepatitis Association of Nigeria in collaboration with eleven Rotary clubs in Port Harcourt, as part of activities to mark the World Hepatitis day, said they just got knowledge of the disease during the campaign.
Lab Technician of the Viral Hepatitis Association of Nigeria Chika Obi told our correspondent that two persons out of over one hundred persons tested for the disease tested positive while four persons who tested negative took the vaccination.
Chika Obi said while it’s sad to note that Nigerians don’t invest on their health, he called on other like bodies to collaborate to make the vaccines against the killer Hepatitis accessible to the people so as to stop increasing cases of the disease.
Meanwhile the President of Rotary club of Port Harcourt, Mike Ezeanya said Rotary international will continue to carry out projects that will improve the health and livelihood of the people.
Rotary Clubs that partners with the Viral Hepatitis Association of Nigeria, for this year’s World Hepatitis day sensitization and campaign include, Rotary Club of Port Harcourt, Eco, Woji Town, Abuloma and GRA.
Others include Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Garden City, SkyWaves, City Valley, Cosmopolitan and Rotary club of Port Harcourt North.
Meanwhile, as part of activities to mark the International Day for the Conservation of the Eco System, the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Eco, Phoenix and Garden city have inaugurated a Plant A Mangrove Project to restore the depleting Eco system.
Speaking at the event, the President of Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Eco, Emem Okon said there is need to strengthen efforts to replace the fast disappearing mangrove due to environmental pollution and other factors that negatively impact the mangrove.
She said the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Eco, Phoenix and Garden city in collaboration with the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre and Niger Delta Snapshots, will plant fifty thousand mangrove trees in various communities in Rivers state to restore aquatic lives and develop the local economy in those areas
On her part, President of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Garden city, Precious Ovie-Oyubu said The Plant a Mangrove Project is an area of focus of Rotary international on Environment that will also create job opportunity for women and youths of these areas.
Precious Ovie-Oyubu said for sustainability, a Rotary community corp will be formed to ensure this project is successful.
