A Court in Yola, the Adamawa State Capital has remanded 5 education officials for allegedly stealing 800 bags donated by the United Nations Children’s Fund ( UNICEF) to public school pupils in two local government areas of the state.
Those remanded are the Education Secretary of the Mubi South Local Government Area Jibrilla Babale.,UNICEF Co- ordinator of Distribution for Mubi South and Mubi North LGAS, Mustapha Muhammed, as well as Musa Mahmud,Aliyu Mohammed and Mohammed Yahaya.
The Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Barde charged the defendants to court for criminal conspiracy,breach of official trust and receiving stolen property.
Represented by by Inspector Boyom Alex, the CP told the court that operatives of the State Intelligence Bureau arrested the suspects following a tip off on October 14th and 16th 2021.
The Police said the Education Secretary who was entrusted with the 800 bags, diverted them and gave them to the UNICEF distributor, Mohammed who sold some to Musa Mahmud of Mubi North for N330,000
Musa Mahmud later sold the bags to Aliyu Mohammed and Mohammed Yahaya both of Mubi North for N420,000
Counsel to the defendants,T.U Danjuma prayed the court to admit all his clients to bail but the prosecutor objected to the plea saying that operation to arrest others linked to the crime was ongoing and granting them bail will jeopardise their effort.
The Presiding Judge, Justice Musa Nuhu Carta thereafter, ordered that the defendants be remanded to prison custody and adjourned the case to 1st November 2021.
