The Federal Government has formally lifted the suspension it imposed on Twitter about six months ago.
This was contained in a statement on Wednesday issued by Kashifu Abdullahi, Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency ( NITDA) ,
The statement reads in part;
The Federal Government of Nigeria ( FGN) directs me to inform the public that President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the lifting of the suspension off Twitter operations in Nigeria effective from 12am tonight, 13th January,2022.
” The approval was given following a memo written to the President by the Honourable Minister of Communication and Digital Economy,Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim.
” In the Memo, the Minister updated and requested the President’s approval for the lifting based on the Technical Committee Nigeria Twitter Engagement’d recommendations.”
The statement added that Twitter has agreed to comply with tax obligations under the Nigerian law and agreed to enroll Nigeria in its Partner Support and Law Enforcement Portals.
The government announced the suspension of Twitter in June 2021 after the social media platform deleted what it termed controversial tweet by President Buhari. The government retaliated by suspending Twitter,a decision which generated uproar in the country.
A Twitter user, who spoke with current matters applauded the Federal Government’s decision.
