...... Okays Indirect, Consensus Direct options
The Nigerian Senate has given in to popular demand to allow for direct, Indirect and Consensus options of nominating candidates for party primaries.
This was made known by the upper legislative chamber at Wednesday’s plenary in Abuja.
The National Assembly had in October 2021 adopted the direct option for all parties election in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill and transmitted the bill to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent. But the President declined assent to the bill citing violations of citizens rights, marginalisation and the huge financial impact it would have on the country’s resources.
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC) Prof. Mahmud on Tuesday announced that the commission will not release any timetable for election until the electoral act amendment was concluded
The Nigerian Labour Congress NLC also recently issued a warning of going on strike if the government failed to assent to the electoral act amendment.
