The General Officer Commanding 6 Division and land component Commander , Operation Delta Safe, Major General Olufemi Oluyede says the development of gender policy by the military is an adoption of the federal government policy to promote gender mainstreaming and women empowerment in the military, which is often regarded as a profession exclusively preserved for men.
He said to effectively discharge their duties , there is need for consideration and balance of responsibility amongst personnel irrespective of their gender.
Major General Oluyede made this known in Bori Camp ,Port Harcourt at the Army Head quarters Department of Civil Military Affairs Maiden sensitization workshop on Gender Mainstreaming for enhanced professionalism in the Nigerian Army.
Represented by Brigadier General Edore Agbebaku, Oluyede said the policy will create an enabling environment to prevent gender disparity in the military, which he said is inline with Chief of Army staff vision of having a professional Nigerian Army.
He said the workshop will enable men and women participating in various military activities, understand their roles and prepare them to accomplish assigned missions within a joint environment in defence of the country.
Meanwhile, the team leader for the workshop, colonel Kayode Ogunsanya who gave an overview of Gender Mainstreaming and Human Rights related concept advised participants at the workshop to take seriously the importance of the workshop.
