The Academic Staff Union of Universities( ASUU) has declared a -one – month industrial action it termed as” comprehensive and total”
This followed the Federal government’s failure to address the grievances of the lecturers.
The President of ASUU,Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke who made the declaration at a Press Conference on Monday said the strike commences immediately and would last for a period of one month.
The development comes after a prolonged period of meetings and negotiations with government officials which yielded no corresponding breakthroughs .
ASUU had last December issued a three weeks ultimatum to the Federal Government within which it would commence total industrial action if the demands it put forward were not met.
The government was said to have met only two out of eight it put forward to the federal government
According to ASUU President , only salary shortfall and setting up of Visitation Panels to the Federal Government owned universities have been addressed by the government in nine months.
He stated” Other demands such as the renegotiation of conditions of service, injection of revitalisation funds, payment of earned academic allowances, implementation of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution,( UTAS) have not been addressed.
The one month warning strike is the outcome of a two- day marathon meeting by officials of the Union held at the University of Lagos.
The meeting began on Saturday through Monday morning.
As at the time of filing the report,Lectures are going on in the University of Abuja and the environment betrayed no air of strike
A third- year student in the Faculty of Science told current matters that although they were conversant with speculations of strike, it was” business as usual” on campus.
He said” Students are very much alert , the picture will become clearer before the end of today.”
Reports in other public schools across the country indicate a gradual shut down of facilities .
Recall that ASUU shut down Universities for 9 months in 2020 . That strike was called off in March 2021 after series of negotiations of which,a memorandum of understanding was reached.
It is however, unclear what the federal government’s next move would be amid the emerging scenario in public universities across the nation..
