Norah Dike , a Barrister at Law,wife and expert in mental health matters took to the podium on Sunday March 13 and addressed a gathering of House of Representatives Members Wives( HORMWA South South on the basics of emotional intelligence.
Speaking on the subject matter,Dike said it was important for people particularly women to perceive, use, understand,manage and handle their emotions and those of others in other to effectively relieve stress, improve communication and empathize with others..
At the event which was a the quarterly meeting of the women hosted by Rivers and Bayelsa states, Dike said the first step to conquering an emotional problem was framing what she called the “Trigger” after which, it is named and then, tamed.
According to her, the benefits of emotional intelligence are numerous as it helps to diffuse tension at home and in public places,build stronger relationships and enable one to make informed choices.
Dike identified emotions as feeling such as Anger, Happiness, Love and Hatred. The triggers she tagged as envy, jealousy, rejection , dejection and depression amongst others, drawing example from the story of Cain and Abel in Genesis Chapter 4 .
Society, she said will be a better place if people pay attention to their own feelings and others and know how to manage and handle them adding that such would go a long way in reducing to the barest minimum end results like assault, and even deaths.
In her remarks, President of the group,Mrs Blessing Mutu, thanked the organisers,Rivers and Bayelsa for a job well done and lauded HORMWA for the show of solidarity and unity among members.
Highlight of the occasion was prayer, group photograph and dinner.
