The Cross River State nominee for the office of National Woman Leader of the All Progressives Congress APC,Betta Edu will not be contesting the office following the provision of Section 84(12) which disallows political appointees to vote and be voted for.
Edu is currently the Commissioner of Health in Cross River State.
It was gathered that the APC Convention sub- screening committee disqualified Edu on the basis of the new law.
President Muhammadu Buhari had while assenting to the Electoral Act 2022, requested the National Assembly to further amend the controversial section but the lawmakers voted against it.
Last Friday,a Federal High Court in Umuahia, the Abia State Capital, presided by Justice Evelyn Anyadike ordered the Artoney General of the Federation to delete the section from the amended Electoral Act.
Justice Anyadike who voided the section ruled that sections 66(1)(f),107(1)(FL,137(1)(f) and 182(1)(f) of the 1999 constitution stipulated that appointees of government seeking to contest elections were to resign at least 30 days to the date of the election.
The decision of the Abia Court has been described by lawyers and politicians as a miscarriage of justice with many seeking to appeal the judgement.
The APC in compliance with the section on Friday said that political office holders in its fold will not vote in the March 26 National Convention.
