Succor came to a nine year-old girl suffering from Cerebral Palsy at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Asaba as the Rotary Club of Asaba Metropolitan, donated hospital equipment worth millions of naira for the management of more than forty children suffering from Cerebral Palsy (CP) in the facility.
President of the Rotary Club of Asaba Metropolitan Arthur Nkemka said the donation is part of the Club’s project and commitment to improve mother and child health in its host community.
Rotarian Arthur Nkemka explained that the club was moved after seeing a disheartening and mind-wrecking medical condition of the nine year old girl-child whose condition has rendered her parents helpless as they couldn’t meet up the financial management of the child.
He said “The case of a lady whose 8-year old baby (looking like a 3-year old) was brought to my attention. This lady stopped going for the therapies over 3 years ago as she couldn’t afford the bills. My club decided to help her. However, a trip to the hospital, for needs assessment, made us realize that the major constraint was the lack of/insufficient basic medical equipment for the management of children with CP. We raised the funds, bought the equipment and donated to the hospital with the agreement/assurance that the management would, henceforth, make the cost relatively low. The hospital MD equally assured us that, given this soul-touching largesse of my club, the current upward price review of treatment costs of different medical sections of the hospital will not affect the treatment of children with CP”.
On his part, District Governor of the Rotary International District 9141, Andy Uwejeyan while commissioning the project made an extra pledge to procure more gadgets to advance the cause of the medical procedure and, in particular, help the little child that inspired the project to procure her needed medications- another girl child uplifted.
Moved by the gestures, the Chief Medical Director of the Federal Medical Center,Asaba, Victor Osiatuma further announced a free life-long treatment for the nine year old child for attracting the gifts/donations from Rotary. He said her parents will no longer pay a Kobo for her treatment as long as the baby needs medical attention in that unit. The CMD FMC Asaba said it was his gift to her for attracting Rotary’s Gift to the hospital.
This form of destiny-help was both overwhelming and bewildering for the mother of this baby girl, Mary Okafor as she burst into tears while expressing her deep-seated gratitude to the Rotary Clubs of Asaba Metropolitan, Asaba Citadel and the Rotaract club of Asaba Metropolis.
Our correspondent Precious Ahiakwo-Ovie reports that highlight of the project event was the donation of 250 blood-donation kits to the blood bank of Federal Medical Center Asaba by members of the clubs.
