The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt East has chartered an EarlyAct club of Eddiba International School to groom and instill leadership skills in pupils in primary schools.
EarlyAct is a school-wide service club for elementary students from ages 5 to 10 sponsored by Rotary Clubs to engage pupil members in character-building activities and prepare them for leadership roles.
President of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt East, Prince Nelson-John during the inauguration of excos of the EarlyAct club said the move is under the Rotary International area of focus of Community Development and Basic Education and Literacy, to improve Basic Education.
“The mission of EarlyAct is to promote goodwill, understanding, and peace through active participation of student members so that with committed citizenship and effective leadership they improve the quality of life for their school, local and global communities. EarlyAct is based upon the Rotary 4-Way Test and further, EarlyAct teaches…Caring, Respect, Empathy, Responsibility, Tolerance, Citizenship, Compassion, Friendship and Leadership. I thank the Rotary International and our District 9141 for this opportunity to effect young lives and I commend members of my club for the support to realize this”, he said.
On his part, Rotary International District 9141 Assistant District, Zone nine, Dr Raymond Nge while presenting the charter certificate to members of the EarlyAct club said the activities of the club will expose the pupils to realize the importance of respect, dignity and caring for all people by promoting good will and understanding through their active participation at school, local and community levels.
“You are privileged to be recognized and trained by such an international organization like Rotary. Through this EarlyAct club, you will be mentored and trained to be a good leader at this tender age. You will learn more to be better children at home and make your parents and society proud of you”, Dr Nge said.
The Assistant Governor zone one, Blessing Timothy explained that by catching them young, the pupils can easily be encouraged to be caring, helpful and to recognize the dignity and worth of each individual which builds respect for others.
“It’s goodnews that this is the second EarlyAct club to be chartered here in Rivers State. Rotary International believes in instilling good values in you from this tender age, and we will mentor you until your Secondary School/Interact level to your University/Rotaract and when you graduate to join the Rotary club! Tell me why you cannot be a great leader after this long quality mentoring!”.
Our correspondent reports that proprietress of Eddiba International School, Rumueprikom, Louisa-Gabriel Bassey said the pupils are happy to be part of the EarlyAct club. She commended the Rotary club of Port Harcourt East for carrying out projects that positively impacts on the people.
“We are happy because the burden on teachers will be reduced. When teaching and learning is practical, it becomes easier for the children to understand especially at this tender age in their Primary education, and that’s what Rotary International is doing through the introduced EarlyAct club. We commend the Rotary club of Port Harcourt East for catching them young. We want further ask that the club extend their benevolence to some parents who couldn’t cater for some of their children in this school who are already out of school. They can’t afford to pay fees of two of the children who are already doing well in the school”, she pleaded.
