A total of thrity one persons lost their lives on Saturday morning to a religious stampede at the Port Harcourt Polo Club field.
An eye witness told this publication that the incident happened when a new generation church,Kings Church Assembly organised a crusade and decided to give away food to the large crowd.
The eyewitness said many people died in the incident.
” The crowd was massive, people were hungry, there were Men, Women and Children. there was poor crowd control so when they started sharing the food, people began to scramble for it,in the process, a lot of people fell on the ground and were mashed to death by the crowd.”
But the Police Public Relations Officer DSP Grace Woyengikuro Inimgba- Koko told current matters that thirty one persons lost their lives.
A source in the church said they have been having this crusade in their church premises but decided to hold it outside the church. however, this is different.she said ” Why should people die in a crusade? This is very sad”
Tears,anger and grief were the common expressions on the faces of those seen at the scene of the incident before the police arrived and cordoned off the area .
A woman said to have attended with four of her children reportedly passed away with the children . Scores are also reported to be injured.
