Former Deputy Senate President,Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice,Nnaemeka have been arrested by the London Metropolitan Police for alleged organ harvesting
The police said on Thursday that the couple were charged with conspiracy to traffic a child to the United Kingdom in order to harvest organs .
The Law Enforcement Agency said the charge followed an investigation by the Metropolitan Police ‘s Specialist Crime team and gave some descriptions which matched that of the Senator and wife.
According to it, Beatrice Nnaemeka Ekweremadu 55(10.9.66) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange, facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.
,Ike Ekweremadu,60(12.05.62) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange, facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.
The police said the investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022.
The development comes a day after Ekweremadu made unpalatable remarks about the presidential candidate of Labour party, Peter Obi.
Ekweremadu had reportedly in an interview on social media said that voting for Obi in the,2023 election was throwing away the votes of the South East which is detrimental to the future of the people of the region..
He was quoted as saying “I can assure you that the South East will vote for PDP. We ask ourselves if Obi wins the election and the answer is No.
” Can the East afford to throw away our votes and be sentimental about a matter that concerns our people, our children and future?. No
” We don’t intend to do a thing that we will regret in the future but we believe that Obi is qualified”.
Shortly afterwards, his statement drew the ire of the Obi Movement who deployed all manner of unprintable adjectives to qualify the former deputy senate president.
Ekweremadu has been in the Senate for 19 years. He served as Deputy Senate President flawlessly for four terms (16 )years. Three consecutive terms under David Mark and one term under, Bukola Saraki.At the moment he is a floor member and aspired to run for office of governor of Anambra State in 2023, but his aspiration on the platform of his party,the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was rejected. The reason being that he hails from the same Senatorial District as current governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
