The hope of the President of the Nigerian Senate,Dr Ahmad Lawan to represent Yobe North in the red chamber for another term appears to be over as the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC’s)certified true copy of Yobe North Senatorial District primary on Friday named Bashir Machina as winner of the election.
According to INEC’S report, Bashir Machina scored 289 votes out of 300 delegates on the May 28,2022 All Progressives Congress (APC) primary affirming Machina ‘s victory claim.
Lawan was a Presidential aspirant in the June 7 All Progressives Congress APC Presidential primary.
He came a distant fourth behind the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.
His desire to pick the ticket from Machina after the presidential primary met stiff resistance as Machina swore to defend his mandate freely given to him by the people through legal means.
APC National Chairman Abdullahi Adamu’s warning that Machine should steer clear of the Yobe North ticket and substitution of Machina’s name with Lawan did not deter Machina from claiming his mandate.
Lawan is one of the longest serving lawmakers in the National Assembly. He was elected into the House of Representatives in 1999 and to the Senate, eight years after and has been in the Senate since then. He was appointed Senate President in 2019.
