The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos on Friday sentenced the Senator representing Delta North, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi to seven years in prison for money laundering.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC had dragged Senator Nwaoboshi and his two firms, Golden Touch Construction Project Ltd and Suiming Electrical Ltd to court for alleged money laundering to the tune of N322 million between May and June 2014.
The lower court in 2018 presided over by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke had discharged and acquitted the respondents on grounds that the prosecution ‘s case collapsed because the bank officials were not called to testify.
The judgement of the lower court did not go down well with the EFCC. Thereafter, the Commission filed an appeal .
Delivering judgement on Friday, the Appeal Court held that the trial court erred in judgement saying ” the prosecution had proved the ingredients of the offence and consequently found the defendants guilty.as charged.’
The court also ordered that the two companies belonging to the Senator be wound up.
