
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office located at Igbo – Eze Local Government Area of Enugu State has been razed .
The incident which happened in the late hours of Sunday at about 11. P.m was reportedly carried out by hoodlums in the community who forced their way through the security of the commission with no motive yet to be known.
However,INEC spokesman,Festus Okoye in a statement on Monday said the report of arson on the commission ‘s facililty was made by the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state,Mr Emeka Ononamadu.
He said the arsonists overpowered the security and set the building on fire.
Okoye said although no casualties were reported a lot of Items were destroyed. They include 748 ballot boxes,240 voting cubicles, office furniture and equipment.
He said at the time of the incident, the commission was working to ascertain the status of voter registration machines for the on- going continuous Voter Registration exercise as well as uncollected Permanent Voters Cards which were locked up in the fireproof cabinet at the commission’s office.
He said the incident has been reported to the police.
