As part of efforts to improve basic education in Rivers State, the Rotary club of Port Harcourt GRA has renovated and hand over 8 classroom Blocks to the Army Children Primary School in GRA Port Harcourt.
President of the Rotary club of Port Harcourt GRA Ozumonu Gudu while handing over the classroom blocks to the school authorities said the project in partnership with Chairbone Global Services is one of the club’s signature projects aimed at Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces.
“As Rotarians, we have increased our impact in this school by renovating this block of 8 classrooms after providing Toilet facilities and expanded our reach as we got Chairbone Global Services to partner with us. We enhanced participant engagement by creating an RCC ( Rotary Community Corps)right here. It may interest us to know that a total of 120 pupils and counting will use this block for this first term of and that number is the least because more pupils will be enrolled and many more will pass through this school. The rewards of imparting and shaping the lives of pupils and students are that we have a better community where lives are transformed meaningfully. The beneficiaries become better citizens and promote global peace”.
“My DG and his entourage thank you for squeezing time out of your ever-busy schedule to be physically present here. We truly appreciate you. To our partner Chairbone, we can’t thank you enough for entrusting your hard-earned money with us we are proud to say every kobo was well utilized by the Service Project Committee. To the Head Teacher, Teachers and pupils we encourage you to protect these desks and cherish the building by keeping it clean always”, she said.
On his part , Project Service Chair of the Club,, Douglas Okafor said Block of 8 Classrooms including the Nursery section was built in the 1970s, and was last renovated in 2006 by Rivers State Government. She said “Doors and Windows of this school are mostly missing, subsisting ones were mostly rotted and the walls of the roofless classrooms were water soaked and crumbling, while the floors had caved in. but I’m happy to see the school wear a new look and also elated to see the children can’t wait to occupy them”.
Our correspondent Precious Ahiakwo-Ovie reports that the District Governor of the Rotary International, Mightyman Dikoru who commissioned the project said “This is one of Rotary’s six areas of focus. Enhancing Basic Education skills and Literacy are essential in reducing poverty, improving health, encouraging community and economic development, and promoting peace. Projects undertaken by a Rotary Club can address low adult literacy, returning youth to school, enhancing student performance, or supplementing limited school resources. Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy”.
